  1. Hey, all! So, I've been a little bored as of late in terms of tank projects, and Aaron (Rivers to Reefs) managed to have a customer back out on an 80 Gallon frag tank that was drilled in a funky way (both holes are on the same small side of the tank and are 1.5"), so leave it to me to get inspired to do something that not many people have done before: A planted, community saltwater tank. (For those of you who are not familiar with freshwater terminology, that refers to planted tanks with schools of fish, often times small, but not necessarily, unless you're me). Leave it to the guy with non-photosynthetic corals to want to set-up a planted tank. Oh, but don't worry, this isn't just any-old "planted" saltwater tank. I'm doing something that I've wanted to do for a long time: Mangroves and sea grasses. (And macro algae, too). To help with my photosynthetic, plant/plant-like friends I'm going to be experimenting with adding some Fiji Mud to my sand bed. I'm probably going to use around 80 pounds of sand and mix in 12 pounds of mud all-throughout as a sort of fertilizer. I've never used mud, but it seems to be proven for helping macros and plants grow, so eh, why not. My plan at the moment is to have just a little bit of rock in the display at the end that's drilled and use that as my open-water, sea grass/macro algae bed. The other side will be my mangrove biotope with lower flow and (hopefully) some nice roots for things to hide in. (Though that will take a long time). The other fun thing is that I'm planning on keeping all small schools of fish, and so behold, my school of 16 (!!!) Apogon parvulus (hereby referred to only as parvulus as I'm lazy): Forgive the tank as it's the neglected, former NPS tank attached to my PS system. I'm using to to quarantine all of my new fish for the 80 as I'd rather do the smaller, more sensitive species in an established tank. Also, I never really learned what happened to my background, but it looked like that after about 3 days of the tank being set-up and I never felt like fixing it. Besides the parvulus, I'm also planning on getting a similarly sized school of Aioliops megastigma, some different shrimp gobies, a pair of twin-spot sand-sifters, and some other species that I just haven't decided on yet. (There are so many interesting species of small fish that people don't normally keep! ) At the moment, I only have the tank, half of the sand, half of the mud, the light, the skimmer, and a few macros. The mangroves should arrive by Monday, so I'll begin conditioning them for a while as I build the stand. Unlike my other projects, I'm hoping to have this one done (where done means the stand is built and the tank is on it with flowing water) in a month, so I hope to be providing more frequent updates than I did with my 93. (Which I need to share photos of). If you all have any recommendations, please, let me know! Happy reefing! Austin
