  1. For example, I could take an awesome macro photo of a thriving red planet acro and call it Andy's Diablo Death Syper Stylin Mad Mille and slap a $1000/inch price tag on it. Most of us will hopefully know that a red mille is a re mille and laugh in my face, but those who do not know any better might buy it, and might think they have something special.

  2. Hi , I'm new here and hail from northeast ohio. I have a Red Sea 525xl 2nd gen that has been running since May 2018. Just now starting to attempt some SPS with the goal for the tank being sps dominant. I started my first reef tank in the flatlands around Lima Ohio in high school with an oceanic 75. Mostly softies and fish since the investment in lights at the time was a little much. Kept a small fish only tank in college (ONU) housing a clown trigger . I graduated with a computer science degree but took supplemental courses in Biology including Zoology , Anatomy and Histology, Marine Biology, and Advanced Marine Biology. I spent the first few weeks of 2 summers at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory bagging and tagging fish. It was one of the best times of my life. Here are my system Specs:Red Sea Reefer 525xlx2 Radion xr30 pro gen 4 (planning to upgrade to a 3rd this week)x2 Vortech mp40wqd Neptune Apex 2016Neptune Cor-15Neptune DOSNeptune DDRNeptune AFSNeptune WXMNeptune ATK Aqua Euro Max CHill 1/4 HP (Not using anymore)Vertex Omega 150 Protein SkimmerVertex RX-U 1.5L Media Reactor (GFO) CO2 Scrubber (in the mail currently) I have a whole house natural gas automatic backup that keeps my tank (and house I suppose) going in case of power outages. Worked well during the last power outages from the windstorm we had last week. I am thinking about adding an algae scrubber and switching the reactor over to Carbon . At some point I will consider a Calcium Reactor, but for now it doesn't fit my needs. May once I get some of these SPS frags to grown. I currently do weekly water changes via home depot 5 gallon buckets. I lost the fight to drill holes in my floor to automate water changes with the two 75 gallon storage units that sit directly below my tank in the basement.

Thank you! This is an article by Todd Willard featuring assists from several individuals who are pioneering this hobby. This thread is 48 pages long, and shows the trail and error, along with the science of reef chemistry explored along the way. This was eye opening to me - and hopefully it sheds some much needed light on the topic of cyano and spirulina for others! https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/back-at-it-peroxide-vrs-cyanobacteria.241002/

@Scott C has me trying the H202 for my dino/hair algae in the frag tank. It will be a week today. Noticing some clearing, but was a little slow on dosing amount. Did 10 mls on a 180 total volume. Bumped it up to 15mls mid week. So hopefully things will start clearing up here soon.

I've dosed Hydrogen Peroxide 1ml/10gal morning and night, and had terrific success with it on cyano... however, if the bloom is actually spirulina - which looks and acts nearly identical to cyano except under a microscope - chemiclean is the best way to go about it from what I've read. I got lost in a R2R forum for a couple of days reading through the effects of h2o2 dosing. I can post the link here, if that's permitted in this group... I'm new here, not sure of the rules governing outside links.

  8. There again, a red mille with rainbow polyps truly would be something rare and maybe worth a ton to someone. You might only be able to tell the difference with a magnifying glass, but different none the less.. Would it be worth a ton to you or me? Is a colorado sunburst worth $1500, when most of us cant tell the difference from an orange rainbow without doing 6 hrs worth of research.. So there's a difference. Things that may truly be one off, but aren't different enough for most of us to justify the exuberant price tag (aberrant tang anyone?). And things that just seem different, due to creative naming or fraudulent photography. I think most of us would agree that this category would be better off not existing, but easier said than done, and this is not always happening maliciously. It's not like we're DNA testing coral to determine that there actually different. And you can also get lots of different looks from the same coral under different conditions.

  9. Some are so nice that it doesn't matter how common they become, they will still hold a decent price tag (e.g., homewrecker, WD, Og Bounce) Some really aren't that unique and similar if not the same coral are constantly be imported. Some times vendors put names on common coral, and people may think that means they are something else. They are effectively manipulating supply and demand by making it seem like it's something different. The trick is to know coral past trade name. It comes with time, research, and experience. It can definitely be tricky, especially with some of the creative photography options we all have, but understanding basic coral characteristics and also having a feel for lighting and coral photography is pretty important these days.

    You gotta check this out

So this will be my second tank build. My first was a 40g breeder tank that I neglected after about 2 years. I ended up tearing it down when I moved. Now that I’m in my new house and I got that itch again. So I decided I’d do a nano tank this time and picked up a c-vue 18g tank and stand. The lighting will be an ai prime (non hd) I have a tunze 3152 nano for ato and a Aqua gadget 5g reserviour. My plan for the tank is mostly LPS and some zoas, I don’t think I’ll do any SPS due to not running a skimmer or refugium. My plan is to do 3g water changes weekly for nutrient export. I’m going to run bare bottom and dry rock so my cycle may take longer then I want to wait, but I want to take my time and do things right. More pics to come

    A new 13.5 Evo

So here's the beginning's of whats no doubt will become my new money pit. An HD Prime will be the single light source. Going to try a deep sand bed and the rock work will be getting some fine tuning shortly. I'll probably get one more piece before calling it done.

    THE EXPO!

I’ve reserved most of the pieces I “Plan” on buying. I will undoubtedly find something else I can’t resist, but the raffle interests me as much as anything. I really look forward to seeing people more than anything as I spend so much time on this site I feel like my friends are here for the most part and this is my chance to see them!

  16. That is only the half of it. I am talking about after that when you go to dump it in the vial. After you tear the along the indicated edge (both sides), you fold a crease from the sealed corner where the powder is, to the opposite open corner. This creates a funnel for the powder to slide in, and there is no spilled powder. I always tried to tear on the indicated edge, and tap the corner so the powder would go in the vial. It would create a huge mess. Hopefully I explained that well. I can take pictures tonight to help show the process.
    1 point
  17. Is there an easier way than tapping the envelope on the corner to get the powder to settle away from the tear indicators?

  18. Are you going to show how to use the phosphate packages without spilling it all over the place? This blew my mind once I figured out how to do it correctly! LOL

  20. If I just change my name to Jason Fox, then every frag in my tank quadruples in value! I joke - but I seriously bought a psammacora at CORA last year, which was fragged off of a JF colony, for $20 -> when a frag from the same colony at the JF booth across the aisle ran $80. BTW - not taking anything away from Jason Fox - I love his passion for this hobby, and his ability to propagate coral in the most simplistic way possibly is an inspiring testament to what stability, patience, and love can do for our aquatic friends! Just thought the story might be relevant.

I was too, until I read the post and followed along... After 14 days my cyano was gone, after that, I went to a single dose weekly to keep it away. Worked great in my old BioCube! Doesn't seem to impact gha, though some reports I've read contradict that. Admins - am I permitted to post a link to a R2R forum post on this?

3 day blackouts might help you out. In all honesty I would go ahead and use chemiclean. Cyano is very hard on fish and chemiclean works. I’m going through bringing my tank back to life as we speak and just used chemiclean over the weekend.

    Camera on tank?

I use a nest cam and link it in through my apex dashboard. Also use the standalone app at times. Of course this is an external view, not underwater.

  28. I think it works well. Love being able to control it from the apex. I have not needed to modify it's flow so far, just being able to turn it off during feedings and cleaning.

  29. I was testing twice a day. But I had a bad Red Sea test kit. I didn’t figure out that it was a bad test kit until it was to late. But Alk and PH are both important to keep up.

I find the Vortech mp40 pumps to be pretty amazing. I have them hooked up to my apex via a WXM module. I have run out of space on my eb832, so I am contemplating buying another.

  34. While it seems some species are more likely to nip than others, I think you are right that it depends on the individual. There are members here with angels that are suspected nippers succesfully. I think all you can do is make a pick based on what you research, but be ready to remove if you need to. I have an Eibli Angel that didn't work out for someone else in one of my tanks. There are only a few frags in that tank that he leaves alone which leads me to think that the set up of the tank, the mix of corals present, and what/when you feed could have as much to do with it than anything.

  36. I don't have a problem paying for coral that I think is petty. Most of you will probably think me crazy for spending what I have on some of my coral. I am a zoa and sps fan by far, but other coral I find equally beautiful. Every piece I collect brings me great pleasure in keeping and watching grow. This happiness is my rarity. What brings me even greater joy, is being able to pass that on to others. I think the designer coral game is obnoxious. hopefully one day it will change, but when people will pay $1k for frags, others will capitalize one it.

  39. This photo is 48 hours after dosing chemiclean, and a 40 gallon water change. - I only dosed for 60 gallons of water on my 90 gallon with 20 gallon sump. I do have lots of rock. - After 12 hours I realized I forgot to remove my filter socks. Not sure how much this effects the results. - Rock and sand look good from the front of the tank. I can see cyano on the back of the rock. - Will monitor results this week and prepare to dose again next weekend.

  42. Nice! You total make sense. There are so many variables, and not one tank is the same. So no one can say there is only one way to success. My recommendation would be to keep it simple. There are so many extras out there CO2 reactoes, CO2 scrubbers, dosers, roller mats, UV, .... The list goes on and on. Everything has its place, but the more simple your setup is, the easier it will be to maintain and keep everything happy. Research, research, research! Always make sure to read up on all livestock before adding it to the tank. Sounds like you have been doing this, which is very good. This may save you some headaches in the future. Don't beat yourself up about the dragonet. They are a hard fish to keep, unless it is accustomed to eating frozen.

  43. Yeah, I still have a 60 gallon freshwater going. Running a Marineland c360 canister filter and a 24w UV on it. 5 cherry barbs, 1 red eye tetra, 1 australian rainbow, 5 peppered corys, 1 emerald cory, 1 female albino bristlenose pleco, 1 green phantom pleco, 2 chinese algae eaters, and the star of the show is Charlie (Brown) - my chocolate pleco... he's an adopted rescue. Yeah, the cube was a tough way to start into salt, but it wasn't the cube's fault. I lurked in the R2R forums for years preparing for the jump, as much as one could. Folks in this hobby, at least the loudest ones, seemed to swear by "their way" - and were really closed minded to anything outside of what had historically worked for them. The manager at my LFS disagreed on nearly every point with my brother in law who used to cultivate and sell coral in his own right. A good friend of mine lost his salt tank to a bristleworm apocolypse...but swore that bristleworms were a good thing? To UV in the tank, or not to UV? My first live rocks in the cube became nitrate heaven - they were TOO good at holding nutrients... even with ridiculous water changes, I never saw nitrates under 10 in that tank - or my new one when I moved that rock. I was spending 30 minutes every night trying to clean off and out the live rock. What I'm getting to is this - it took me awhile to trust myself to try something new in this hobby. Swapping to 40lbs of CaribSea liferock... being okay with a skimmer that works but isn't exactly a RedSea... risking all of my livestock (I've lost a male dragonet blenny and a nassarius snail) for a larger grain dry substrate - knowing I was going to have another cycle to weather. The ups and downs in this hobby, at least for me, take a somewhat physical toll. So. Many. Variables. I don't know if any of that made any sense, but the pieces are there...

So I finally got everything I wanted/needed to get this thing running. I just put in my intank media basket, I’ll probably order the fuge basket from them soon. And I picked up a tunze 6040 with the controller which I’m still playing with to find the setting I like. Now the water is in and I started my cycle with dr Tim’s one and only and the ammonium chloride. I just turned the light on for the pic I’ll probably change the settings to mimic the ab+ settings. And I know the water is really cloudy but here it is so far.
