Reef crystals used to be known for it, but I haven't experienced it for more than 5 years.  Do you heat the water up before you mix?  I think that was the trick for me.

When I mixed salt, I always had it at 78* before any salt went in the container. As well as a powerhead running. I always added the salt on slowly. Taking about 30 min to get it all in. And always had nasty brown on my lid and around the container at water level. That’s why with this next set up, I don’t want to use ReefCrystals.
