90 Gallon Starfire SPS

Recommended Posts

Couple more things finished up. Finally configured my other FFM to add 2 leak detectors, a high sump sensor, and a 1/4” flow sensor for the RODI. Eventually I’ll add a 3rd FFM since I do have an extra optic eye and leak detector. The ATO reservoir was moved with the RODI tank after my extension cable came for the ATO pump. Now all the dosing tubes will run through the stand and into the wall. still have a solenoid valve I’ll connect with the RODI tank to turn off the water supply of the optic eye in there is ever opened.

the breakout box from apex is honestly the nicest feature for convince. With some simple magnetic door switches the stand lights will come on when the doors open. Adding a few push buttons to the control panel for feeding mode and a complete shut off button

slowly making progress. The tank is cycling and ammonia levels are rising.  Gives me plenty of time to get the rest of the apex stuff hooked up. Have a dos pump to get going soon and will add a second for automatic water changes.

Needles to say there is no way this control board is going back in where I’ll feel safe with it. I’m modifying the stand to extend out on that side by a couple inches. Gives me plenty more room and no fear or electronics getting wet. Also making a stand near the RO tank for the DOS pumps and reservoirs. It will be made to hold 2 of the Neptune DDR and 3 DOS pumps.

ill be window shopping at the frag swap next weekend but I’ve got awhile before it’s ready to add anything to.

It’s a fine line when having electronics next to water. But the further away you keep the two, the better you are. It’s good to have to fix problems now instead of when the tank is loaded.

Still awaiting some stand modifications. Did throw some sand in the fuge and some real reef rock rubble. Planning to add some shaving brushes, blue Chondria coerulescens, and dragon breath tongue breath.

in order to get the dos pumps going I had to order some 6’ usb extension cords.

Does your big box home center carry clear pine like that?  Looks great!

Yeah I got them from Menards. They were originally going to be used for a QT tank stand but I bought a metal stand instead. I took some black epoxy paint to these which was hard to do but it’s better to coat it in case it ever gets wet.

Tank is going through it’s cycle. Nitrite spike is over and onto the nitrate spike.

ammonia- 0.25

nitrite- 0.1-0.25

nitrate- 50

Finishing the stand went on hold the past week while I put up all new trim and doors in the house. But after the frag swap Saturday I’ll get it finished up and put together. Slight diatom bloom going on but i reduced down the lights to a few hours a day at low intensity and kicked on the skimmer finally. Bloom indicates the cycle is going as planned and normal to see.

The rimless is amazing if you can pull it off with no cords going over the edge. The only issue is the Neptune feeder has to be mounted on the back but it doesn’t bother me there. The vortechs are on the back wall which hopefully works. The most I can get both going is around 50% without sand blowing everywhere. But it’s plenty of flow with the return lines for sps.

Also ordered a 165 watt black box LED with that I’ll be using on a future frag QT tank. Might get around to that this weekend. Also throwing a black box on the QT  fish tank for better lighting for observation.

After the swap I stopped by salty critter and this store is probably my favorite I’ve been too. Their tanks and selection were hard to beat. The attention to detail is what made me appreciate this store. Picked up a flame hawk, watchman goby, and tiger pistol shrimp.

I do plan on adding another goby and shrimp pair to the tank down the road but it’s a unique pair that’s hard to beat.

Love the flame hawk, I am saving room in my 90 for a pair if I can ever find them.

live aquaria divers den gets bonded pairs pretty often. They are a very personable fish to have in the tank

Me too!, someone on R2R said add a very small one to the one I have now and they should pair up.  I just don’t think I could watch if it went badly.

Sch a nice build Andrew.  I love the equipment shelf you built.  Where is in in relation to the tank?

To the right of the tank behind the wall the thermostats on. I ran all the wires and hoses through a modified outlet cover.

Tank is still rolling pretty good. Ordered some pods from algae barn. Macro algae and snails from addictive reef keeping will be here next week.

Where you happy with tidier order from the Algae barn?
