What could be going on here?

So one of the things I like to do when using plywood for furniture pieces is make sure edges that are likely to show wear over time have real wood edging. Kids and pets tend to bump into things and plywood edges are brittle. So I got those added to where the front corners will be and as Norm used to say... “now for a little assembly”

That’s a work of art! Maybe it should be stained instead of painted?

Thanks! I believe this would look best painted given where it is going, but like everything that is an opinion!  My wife has a definite opinion about my opinion lol.  She says if she ever needs decorating advice for a seventies retro project I'm hired haha.
