Ok, now I'm with you.  I used a 20 gallon and drilled it just like you are stating and a small pump feeds the screen.  The pump needs to run 24/7. The light timing causes a lot of debate!  Some light 24 hours, I personally feel algae evolved with a day/night cycle so I turn my ATS lights off for 4 hours a day.  I make this off time right in the middle of my display's day time which helps with ph shifts.  I'm sure the water running over the screen causes some more top off, but so is the 8 or so square feet of surface area in the new sump!  I really need to get off my rear and get an ATO on my system.

Have you seen the cryptic sump method? I am going to try to combine a multi sump system with both a cryptic live rock sump and a sand based macro algae sump.

Stage 1 - mechanical to include filter socks/mesh and skimmer

Stage 2 - macro algae

Stage 3 - love rock or cermedia
