ncr
I am planning a 40g breeder build and was wonder if this would be a good overflow box for it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1000-Gph-Nano-Overflow-Box-Internal-Reef-Aquarium-Surface-Skimmer-for-fish-tank/202104694903?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3Ddac81e33194b47c8b50d36edc9c68982%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D12%26rkt%3D30%26sd%3D162233261564&_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598 Edited January 11, 2018 by ncr

Muttley000
I like to recommend reading this when trying to decide what to do about hole size http://wetwebmedia.com/BulkheadFloRateArt.htm i recently tried a Beananimal style overflow and will be trying another on my
ncr
What size pump is good for a 40?
Muttley000
Your sump size is a piece of the puzzle as you don't want too much flow through there or you may get bubble problems. Are you planning on running anything else off your return pump like reactors? Lastly will you use powerheads in the tank for flow, so the return is purely for filtration? Not knowing the answers to the below, I am guessing you will need something that delivers around 400 to 500 GPH after head loss.
ncr
It is going to be a 30 gallon tank for the sump. I don't plan on running anything off of it. I will have power head if the flow isn't enough by the return pump but I am guessing the return will not be enough. Thanks for the help
Muttley000
Well I would shoot for about 400 after head loss then. If a DC pump is in your budget you could always adjust the flow where you were happy
Nanoreef13
I used a ball valve to open and close the flow from my return on my frag tank. I was running a rio 2500 and my guess is that I was restricting about half of that. It was easy and cheaper then buying a dc pump and I could adjust it at any time.
