Muttley000
Sounds like you are doing the right things. Remember the problem didn’t come overnight and it will take time to rid it. What lighting are you running and for how long? Do you grow algae in a fuge?
Ron sprouse
Yeah I have a small hang on fuge( probably not sufficient) on the sump I run the same cycle as the display lights that are 2 250 watt metal halide and 2 t5.. they run from 9 in the morning till about 7 at night Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
crimsonvice
How much are you feeding? I was struggling with green hair algae not too long ago. I was feeding a heavy amount once a day. I cut back to once every three days and monitored the fish. Everything slowly receeded. After that I slowly started feeding more. Keep in mind the algae is going to be consuming some nutrients in the tank, so even though your readings may be "normal", that could be because of all the algae. Also what kind of flow do you have. The more the better. In some areas of lower flow you may see.ore algae growth.
Ron sprouse
Kind of scared its going to start killing my corals.. or am I safe on that? kind of a noob to the hobby my father owned a tank for years till it popped a leak and he quit Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Ron sprouse
Well that was the thing I went cheap on power heads and yesterday I noticed I had 2 that was running backwards so I don't know if it's low flow-old lighting- or over feeding or all of the above I have a tang a lion and 2 damsels that i hope make it on the lions menu the tang gets fed dry seaweed every 2 days and the lion gets a small gold fish every day Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Muttley000
How old are your bulbs in the metal halide fixtures, they need changed about every 6 months because the color shifts and tends to encourage algae. It wouldn't hurt to cut a couple hours out of the lighting too. I would increase the flow like Brandon mentioned also, and manually remove as much of the growth as you can each day. Ron sprouse
Okay I just added 4 more pumps (temporary) and id say the bulbs are well overdue just been putting off buying new bulbs till I can get a reef breeder..... I'm going to cut hours from 9-5 And start feeding every other day with less food and keep the other power heads in till I get better ones... sound about right? Muttley000
Sounds like a plan. How often do you do water changes, may be a good idea to do one.
Ron sprouse
I do a 10 gallon water change every weekend I was told by my local fish store (aquarium adventure) 10% of total water volume every other week but I do one every week to clean up detritus being bare bottom it drives me but seeing it set Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Muttley000
Well that certainly seems sufficient. I would try to suck out as much as you can when you do your water change. Keep us posted on your progress!
Ron sprouse
Will do thanks Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Ron sprouse
So I've done a 2 day black out and 2 days with out feeding and the slime has started to go away I'm going to keep up the feeding every 2 days and keep the lights on for a short period everyday but im trying to figure out how long I should keep them on or off with out killing my corals any idea? I got a med sized frog spawn a couple med hammer corals and a bunch of mushrooms..Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Muttley000
I'd maybe try 6 hours a day. You just have to keep an eye on things. Also remember as that red slime recedes the nutrients are going back in the water. If you don't remove them somehow it will just grow back! Ron sprouse
Well I'm getting ready to do a 10 gallon water change should I up the gallons of the water to say 15 gallons my tank is a 75 gallon with about 15 gallons in the sump or what would you suggest?Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Muttley000
The more the better IMO, but I would do it right away and remove as much of what's left as possible. If this doesn't work in a couple weeks you could try red slime remover. I personally don't like the stuff, but many have used it succesfully
crimsonvice
I agree. I have used red slime remover and it worked successfully, but if you can keep up with the adjusted schedule and water changes it should work. I am more inclined not to add stuff to my tank if possible.
